My work is a search for tranquility, a quiet place or a quiet of the mind.
I am drawn to explore the beauty and complexity of small things – the textures and patterns of plants and pathways, patterns on sand after the tide is out, lichens on tree bark. Painting vignettes of what I see along the path is a search for serenity and an extension of my long-time interest in plant collecting and gardening.
I paint people too, but not in the portrait sense. I like to capture moments when they are engaged in work or play, or just thinking. In the end, I want to viewers to wonder what’s on their minds.
Elizabeth Veldey was born in Minnesota and moved around the midwest before settling in Detroit, then Chicago, then Columbus, Ohio. After a long career in banking, her 2015 retirement plan was to become an artist. Thinking she might have some raw talent but not having the benefits of an art education, she started taking classes at the McConnell Art Center in Columbus, Ohio. There she found adult students like herself, great teachers, and a never-too-late atmosphere.
Elizabeth works primarily in oil paint and colored pencil. Her paintings use the same process as the old masters. They start with detailed black and white drawings onto which five to ten thin glazes of color are painted providing a depth and richness. Her pencil drawings follow a similar process of layering color, one stroke at a time.
